DIY done
I was looking on the net, to some things I would like to have in my home decor, when suddenly come to me a stange idea (lol). I remember myself looking at a picture and think: "I can do that!". So I started making (or at least trying to make) my own version of the things I liked. Here I want to share some of them.

Inventando y copiando
Como el presupuesto en casa a veces es limitado, y me gusta decorar la casa, siempre ando buscando ideas para decorar a bajo o ningún costo. Aquí comparto algunas de esas ideas que inventé o copié. Tú, que has hecho últimamente?
(Perdonen la calidad de las fotos, pero no soy fotógrafa, ni mi cámara es de uso profesional....ah! y prepárense para leer mucho "spanglish", jejeeje)
Estas botas de plástico ya no le sirven a mi hijo. Las encontraba tan "cómicas" que no quería regalarlas o botarlas. Usa objetos poco comunes para poner flores artificiales.Cuestan un poco más que buscando flores del jardín, pero el tiempo de duración compensa el gasto.
Cuando nos mudamos a la casa, nos dejaron algunos muebles de los que me enamoré tan solo verlos. Tuve que botar algunos "con dolor en el alma" porque estaban muy deteriorados, pero pude mantener otros. Uno de los que se quedó es éste chinero. He pensado en pintarlo, pero luego pienso que si no me gusta será complicado devolverlo a su estado anterior. El chinero ahora guarda los materiales de manualidades para los nenes de la iglesia, asi que daba cierta noción de desorden a la sala. Queria cubrir sus cristales, pero el papel que conseguí para ello era muy costoso. La versión barata de aquél papel?... papel de scrapbooking!

Helechos (cortados del patio de casa) en botellas de "yo-hoo" con piedras decorativas transparentes. Pon agua para que el helecho dure unos días. Cambia los helechos por hojas de palma, flores, alguna grama, troncos secos de árbol, etc.
Usa un caracol, una taza o cualquier recipiente decorativo para sembrar un cactus. Estos son ideales para interiores, ya que no requieren mucho cuidado.
Usa cajas de plástico para colocar libros. Las de la foto, serán pintadas luego del mismo color, y los libros con carátula deteriorada serán forrados o puestos en cartapacios del mismo color.

Mi padre es artista, por lo que tiene en casa muchos marcos vacíos (y viejos, jejeeje) que ha ido coleccionando con el tiempo. Un día que estuve de visita en su casa vi un marco tirado en la casa de herramientas y sin preguntar lo tomé : ) . Solo lo pintamos, le pusimos tela y listo. Ahora es un cabezal de cama.
Los tiestos de estas plantas? Latas de pintura pintados de colores llamativos. Aquí también fueron útiles las cajas plásticas.
Quería unos letreros "vintage" para la casa. El problema era que costaban más de lo que mi presupuesto permitía (como el "vintage" está de moda ahora, los precios de dichos artículos han subido....)
Hicimos un cambio de cuartos en la casa y eliminamos la puerta del closet de mi hijo, porque era muy angosta. Tenía planes para ella, así que la guardé. Lo que no sabía era que estaba toda despegada, así que terminé con varios pedazos de madera en lugar de una puerta. La madera de éstos letreros son los pedazos de la puerta. Los pinté de colores llamativos, como el resto de la casa. Busqué en la red imágenes "vintage", las pasé al "power point", las imprimí, pegué a la madera, y listo!
Este último letrero es todo hecho en "power point". Como queríamos decorar con motivos playeros, sólo busqué un "clip art" de playa y aumenté el "font" al tamaño deseado. Sencillo!
No hay que gastar grandes cantidades de dinero para tener una casa linda y divertida. Además, te sorprenderás de lo hábil que puedes resultar ser.

Ideas, ideas, ideas...
Cuando se tiene una casa pequeña, existen algunos límites a la hora de decorar. El espacio no es el único problema, sino la sensación final que crea una habitacion pequeña. Me explico, se puede tener un cuarto pequeño con muchas cosas, pero sin hacernos sentir claustrofóbicos. Todo está en como acomodamos las cosas, la unidad que le damos y el orden que mantenemos. Aquí presento algunos trucos.
En la sala o el comedor
Utiliza seccionales.
Usa cortinas largas que dan la sensación de techos altos.
Si es posible, utiliza alfombras para dividir áreas.
Pon algún espejo en la pared, para crear la sensación de amplitud.
Ten muebles con doble uso, como un sofá cama, una mesa de centro donde puedas guardar juguetes, etc.
Utiliza tablillas para guardar y mostrar objetos decorativos.
Usa canastas o cajas decorativas para ocultar objetos.
Compra muebles con ruedas o si es posible, ponle ruedas a los que ya tienes para facilitar su movimiento.
En la cocina
Utiliza un "pot rack" (nosotros y nuestro spanglish, jejeej) para las ollas.
Pon tu vajilla en tablillas para decorar, igual que las tazas y vasos en cristal.
En la sala o el comedor
Utiliza seccionales.

Vanilla flan
INGREDIENTS FOR CARAMEL
1 cup of sugar
6 tbs. of water
DIRECTIONS FOR CARAMEL
1. Mix very well water and sugar in a pot.
2. Put on medium high fire until it boils. (Avoid using a spoon or anything to mix caramel during heating.)
3. After one minute of boiling (or when caramel has the consistency and color you want) turn off the heat.
4. Pour caramel over the pan you are going to use, making sure to spread it on the sides of the pan too.
*This is my way of making caramel, there are so many more, use the one you prefer. Here some sites where you can look for it.

1 pinch of salt
1 tsp. of vanilla
DIRECTIONS:
1. Heat oven to 350 Farenheit grades.
2. Mix in a blender all 5 eggs.
3. Add remaining ingredients. Mix well on blender.
4. Pour mixture over pan with caramel.
5. Put a pan (bigger than the one with caramel) in oven. Inside this pan place the one with flan mixture.
6. Add water to the bigger pan, (being careful not to overfill it so the water gets in the flan mixture)
7. Bake for one hour.
8. Let flan stand until cool. Unmold it and refrigerate.

Albondigas hawaiianas
INGREDIENTES
1 lb. carne molida
1 t. relleno de pavo o de pollo
1 cdta. adobo
1 lata 15.5 oz. piña en cuadritos (con su jugo)
3/4 t. salsa BBQ
PROCEDIMIENTO
1. Calienta horno a 350 grados F
2. Adoba la carne.
3. Añade a la carne el relleno y forma las albondigas.
4. Coloca en molde y hornea por 30 minutos.
5. Mezcla salsa BBQ y piña. Añade a las albondigas.
6. Hornea hasta que las albondigas esten cocidas (mas o menos media hora mas)
*Sirve sobre arroz blanco
*Si usas albondigas ya cocidas, no tienes que adobar, ni usar el relleno. El tiempo de hornears se reduce a 15 minutos. Añade la salsa y el jugo de piña antes de poner las albondigas en el horno.

What I learn from a 7 year old "man"
Having a son with "special" needs is an experience I wasn't expecting in life. Have to admit I thought I was better prepare for anything that will come to my life...I was wrong. Still, after all the frustration and worries (specially about my son's education), I have to admit I feel honored that life give me "this opportunity". Somehow, my son has made me grown and mature in many ways. People might think that he learns more from me than what I learn from him, but sometimes I think its otherwise. Here I share some things I learned because of him.
I learn...
that he is never too young to understand or to care.
that my attention is the most important thing for him.
to value every smile and hug he gives me (when he gets older, I will get less than now).
to stop worrying about the house, my life or even the bills (lol) and just enjoy him.
that believing in magic is fun.
to always do what I say I will do.
to value ordinary and common things.
to treasure the importance of a safe and fun house, instead of a cute and glamorous one.
Time will pass, and he will grow up. Things won't be the same as now, but still, my learnings and shared time hopefully will stay with him.
I learn...

Thanksgiving decoration
Here in Puerto Rico we think of thanksgiving day as the beginning of xmas, (and believe it or not, our xmas celebration lasts like 2 months), but we don't pay much attention to decoration that first day; thanksgiving day I mean. Even when it's a tradition we inherited from USA, the true meaning of it is valuable and beautiful. Instead of sitting to a table with the family and just make a pray before eating our turkey, we should consider what are we thanking for and let others know how much we appreciate them. Even by decorating in a special way the table, the entryway of the house or giving small favors we give thanks to our guests without using words. Here I want to share some really easy decorations and details we can do.
DETAILS
1. Use scrapbooking paper, craft paper or kitchen towels to make easy and cheap placemats for your table.
2. Prepare activities and crafts to do with the kids, so they don't get bored.
